Air
The closest international airports are Schiphol
(Amsterdam) and Düsseldorf. Trains are more convenient from Schiphol.
Train
There are trains from Schiphol to
Nijmegen (change at Duivendrecht). There is also a direct connection from Amsterdam
Central Station (CS) to Nijmegen. Trains to Nijmegen leave every 30 minutes and the trip
takes approximately an hour and a half. You can plan your trip within the Netherlands
using the Dutch National Railway
web site. If you are travelling by train from outside the country, there is also
an international planner.
The most efficient way from Germany is to take the international line
from Cologne/Düsseldorf to Amsterdam as far as Arnhem. There you will
find a direct connection to Nijmegen. Coming from Hannover/Osnabrück,
you change trains in Deventer. Timetables for the
Deutsche Bundesbahn
are available online. Coming from France or Belgium, you should
change in Roosendaal for direct connections to Nijmegen.
The main train station in Nijmegen is Nijmegen Centraal Station, which is located downtown.
There is also another train station, Station Heyendaal, which is a ten minute walk from
the University.
Bus
The extensive Nijmegen bus system also serves the LabPhon 7 venue. The main bus
terminal is located right outside of the central train station. Most or all of the
buses mentioned here also stop at Plein 1944 downtown. The closest
routes, lines 1 and 11, run along the east edge of campus, where
you should get off at the Erasmuslaan stop. Lines 3, 6, 8, and 9 run along the
west edge, where the nearest stop is Tandheelkunde. Two routes, lines 10 and
25, run just north of the conference building (stop Bibliotheek). Most bus
drivers will alert you when your stop arrives if you have asked.
Local public transport (i.e., everything excluding the national railways)
throughout the Netherlands uses the "Nationale Strippenkaart", or
"strippenkaart" for short. These are sold at train stations, post offices and by
most tobacconists. They come in small (15 strips for approx.
NLG 11.75) and large (45 strips for approx. NLG 34.50). It is also possible to
purchase a ticket on the bus, but it is more expensive. Most travel within Nijmegen
costs two strips for a one-way trip. The trip to Berg en Dal or Heilig Landstichting
requires three strips.
Downtown
On weekdays, lines to/from downtown (1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 25) run 2-4
times per hour, beginning very early in the morning and continuing (for most lines)
until approximately midnight. On Saturdays, lines 10 and 25 do not run at all, but
most of the lines run nearly as often as on weekdays. They begin slightly later,
but still well before the conference starts, and they run just as late.
On Sunday, lines 10 and 25 do not run, lines 1, 3, and 11 run
infrequently, and other lines begin around 9:00 and run less often than on
other days.
Nijmegen hotels
The hotels De Herbergierster, A. Capella, and Mesdag are on or near lines 1, 9,
and 11. Hotel Catharina is on lines 3, 6, 8, 10, and 25. The hotels downtown
(Atlanta and Belvoir) are near all the bus lines. See the paragraph above for
schedule information.
Hotel Sionshof
To get from Hotel Sionshof (in Heilig Landstichting) to the conference, we suggest
walking or taking the conference shuttle bus. If you want to go from Sionshof to
downtown, bus lines 5 and 25 should be good.
Berg en Dal hotels
All of the hotels in Berg en Dal can be reached fairly conveniently by line 6,
which runs along the west edge of the campus (Tandheelkunde stop). The bus runs
through downtown and stops at the train station on its way between the university
and Berg en Dal (approximately a 30 minute ride). Line 6 departs Berg en
Dal in the direction of Nijmegen at approximately 7, 22, 37, and 52
minutes past the hour (on Saturday at 4, 19, 34, and 49 minutes past the
hour). It departs from the university (Tandheelkunde stop) in the
direction of Berg en Dal at 2, 17, 32, and 47 minutes past the hour until
18:02, thereafter at 21 and 51 minutes past the hour until approximately
midnight (same on Saturday). On Sundays, the bus departs Berg en Dal on
the half hour.
Shuttle
A free shuttle service will be provided between the major hotels and the LabPhon 7
lecture room on campus, making one trip each way every day. The
hotel descriptions detail which of the hotels
are served.
Taxi
A taxi (taking maximally 4 persons) from Berg en Dal (location
of several hotels) to downtown
Nijmegen costs approximately NLG 30 and to the university campus NLG 20.
The trip from campus to downtown Nijmegen costs approximately NLG 20.
Taxis cannot be flagged down or hailed on the street, but must be ordered
by calling one of the phone numbers below or taken from one of the taxi
ranks downtown.
